DESCRIPTION:As a babe Jeffrey Martin sought out solitude as often as he could find it. He’s always been that way\, and he has never understood the whole phenomenon of smiling in pictures\, although he is a very happy guy. One night in middle school he stayed up under the covers with a flashlight and a DiscMan\, listening to Reba McEntire’s ‘That’s the Night that the Lights Went Out in Georgia’ on repeat until the DiscMan ran out of batteries. That night he became a songwriter\, although he didn’t actually write a song until years later. After high school he spent a few years distracting himself from having to gather up the courage to do what he knew he had to do. \nEventually he found his way to a writing degree\, and then a teaching degree. He wrote most days like his life depended on it\, all sorts of things\, not just songs\, but songs too. He fell in love with teaching high school English\, which was fantastic because he never thought he’d actually come to truly love it. His students were fierce and unstoppable forces of noise and curiosity\, and for all that they took from him in sleep and sense\, they gave him a hundred times back in sparks and humility. \nAll the while he was also playing truckloads of music. There was one weekend where he flew to LA while grading essays on the plane\, played two shows\, and then flew back home\, still grading essays\, and woke up to teach at 5 am on Monday morning. It was around this time he started wondering if such a life was sustainable. \nAlas\, music\, the tour life\, was a constant raccoon scratching at the back door. Jeffrey spent nights on end sitting up in bed\, and then sitting on the front porch\, staring off into the dark\, wondering if he could bear to leave teaching to go on tour full time. Eventually his brain caught up with what his guts had known for months. With tears in his eyes he announced to his students that he wouldn’t be back the following year\, and that he didn’t feel right hollering at them to chase their dreams at all cost if he wasn’t going to do the same. \nJeffrey Martin tours full time now. He is always making music\, and he is always coming through your town. He misses teaching like you might miss a good old friend who you know you’ll meet again. \n  \nAnna Tivel is a Portland\, Oregon-based\, internationally touring songwriter\, who is forever drawn to the quiet stories of ordinary life. The characters and imagery that populate her writing are full of breath and vivid color. With six full-length albums out and her seventh on the way\, Anna has been likened to a short story writer and praised by NPR\, Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, and others for her keen observations of the human condition. In fact\, Ann Powers of NPR Music had this to say\, “Anna Tivel is just one of my absolute favorite living songwriters. Well\, dress up and compete in our Costume Contest! A Grand Prize will be awarded for the best costume too! \nDrag has a rich cultural history that spans across decades\, it has transformed from a common theatre practice to a political stand against fixed roles of gender and sexuality. Whilst drag has maintained a powerful presence in entertainment\, it also deserves recognition for being an example of an expressive and empowering art form. It is a form of performance and art and should be considered as such. It combines skills of fashion and facial/bodily metamorphosis to create the illusion of a gender. Drag queens exude femininity and female empowerment through their appearance. Ultimately\, drag is about becoming a whole new person\, freed by concepts of gender and sexuality. It is intended to liberate and excite! This is a wonderful way to come out and support our 2SLGBTQ+ community\, at a time when that is desperately needed. Black\, Holli B. Sinclair\, Melody Lush Paradisco\, and Macy Marcs!\nOur Queens will perform for you\, and in between the sets we will host a totally fun game show with audience participation! Got a gnarly 80’s outfit? Well wear it and join our 80’s Summer Fashion Show! A Grand Prize will be awarded to the winner with the best threads! \nDrag has a rich cultural history that spans across decades\, it has transformed from a common theatre practice to a political stand against fixed roles of gender and sexuality. Whilst drag has maintained a powerful presence in entertainment\, it also deserves recognition for being an example of an expressive and empowering art form. It is a form of performance and art and should be considered as such. It combines skills of fashion and facial/bodily metamorphosis to create the illusion of a gender. Drag queens exude femininity and female empowerment through their appearance. Ultimately\, drag is about becoming a whole new person\, freed by concepts of gender and sexuality. It is intended to liberate and excite! \nYou have an option to reserve a table for 4 guests. Reserved Table Tickets are $120 for 4 people ($30 per person).\nIndividual tickets are $25 and you will have your choice of first come\, first served seats around Miller’s. \nDoors open at 6pm\, Show begins at 7pm. Gather with like-minded members of our Valley community to learn ways you can be the best Ally possible! River is an amazing teacher and we are thrilled to host her for her third presentation at Miller’s! We create a safe and welcoming container for you to connect with our community\, learn some new information\, and ask any questions you might have. \n\nIn this third gathering we will discuss:\nIntersectionality & Where You Fit\nAs we come to understand intersecting identities how do we translate that into allowing others to show up as their whole selves in day to day life? What is power and privilege and how can we use it to leverage ourselves against oppression? \nAllyship Everywhere\nOppression is a systemic issue that also takes root in our everyday lives. Learn where and when you can incorporate more accessibility and inclusion in your everyday practices. Test out your allyship muscles in real time as we work through active ally scenarios as a group. \nGoals\n•Discuss the importance of intersectionality as it relates to creating more inclusive spaces.\n•Cultivate an understanding of the overlap between privilege and allyship and how to utilize privilege effectively to best support marginalized people. \nDuring our presentation from the GSBA\, the floor will be open for you to ask questions to gain a better understanding of these topics. Gather with like-minded people in our Valley community\, make new friends\, and feel supported as we gain a deeper understanding of these topics together. \n\nThis event is FREE to the public because of the generous donations we have received from our community.\nDoors open at 6:45pm.
